What Does It Take to Become a Translator?

by Arshad

I would like to be an oral translator... can you tell me more about the job profile for a translator and how I can get into this career?

ANSWER: Arshad... Great question! Whenever you want to enter a new career path, you need to do your research. Obviously, I'm not an expert on every career out there.

So, you can start by looking online for job postings for translators to see what employers are looking for in the way of qualifications. You can also look for career websites that talk about what is needed to enter this path. Do you have what it takes?

If not, then you'll need to get the education or training required. You could also interview someone currently working in the field to learn more about this type of job and how to get involved in it.

Becoming a Translator

There are a lot of different paths you can take to become a professional translator. You might want to start by doing some volunteer translation work, then checking your translations with a teacher or professional translator.

There's not a particular major or course of study that you HAVE to study, but languages, journalism and even technical subjects can serve you well. There are a couple of posts on this page that can give you some more information. Best of luck!
