Basically, most web hosting these days should be cheap or low cost. There's really no reason to pay an arm and a leg for web hosting, unless you have a huge, database-driven site. Obviously, that doesn't apply to a simple resume/portfolio website.

For online resumes, you should be able to find hosting for well under $10/month. Most hosts will let you pay month to month, so if you find a job after a few months, it's easy enough to cancel your account.

But how do you know if they're any good? After all, you're looking for more than just a glorified domain registrar. You want to make sure that your resume will always be visible to prospective employers and/or that there is enough bandwidth available for you to post your portfolio of work.

I want to be sure you know about the best web hosts for posting online resumes, so I thought I'd tell you what I've learned during my years on the Web.

Here are some important things you should look for when choosing a cheap web host:

• Price—Ideally, they'll host a 1 to 5 page website for no more than $5 a month (or at least under $10/month).


• Reputation—There are a lot of fly by night web hosting providers out there in cyberspace. Choose one that is recommended to you by someone you trust or at the very least, that can offer lots of testimonials.


• Customer Service—Make sure support is part of the deal. Email support is good, but available telephone support, should you need it, is even better.


• Flexibility—Right now, you might only be looking to post your resume, but needs change over time. The best web hosts offer easy upgrades for when you're ready to take your website to the next level.

• GoDaddy. For best of breed, you can't beat GoDaddy. They're easy to use, offer many different levels of service, and their Website Tonight product makes it easy to get your website launched. • HostGator.com. I've used this webhost for years for a few of my websites and I've never been disappointed. They have cheap plans that still offer tons of features and even unlimited webspace. They've been very reliable and they do offer a free site builder that you can demo before you sign up. Check out HostGator here


• HostMonster.com. I've also used this webhost, and they have not only been inexpensive, they've been every bit as reliable as HostGator and other hosts I've used over the years. You can't go wrong with them! Try them out here
