What if my certificate is in question?

by Krista
(Hamilton, ON)

Several years ago I completed an online training course for which I earned a certificate. I have since learned that this "school" is out of business and many complaints are lodged against them.

I have no other post secondary education to put on my resume, so how should I handle this?

ANSWER: I still think I would include it. The new employer may or may not know about the problems you mention & I certainly wouldn't volunteer that info! But either way, it's not a strike against you that you got that certificate and it still shows that you pursued the extra education... even if the quality wasn't great. That wasn't your fault. At worst, it just won't be considered as a valuable addition to your qualifications.
