To whom should I direct my cover letter?

by Debbie
(Virginia)

I would like your advice on who to direct my cover letter to. The job posting includes no contact info. and requires applying online. However, there is an opportunity to attach a cover letter.

The organization is very large and I was able to find out only the names of executive level positions in the company--the Sr VP of HR and the Sr VP of Marketing (this is a marketing position). Neither is likely to be the person who receive my application. Whose name should I include in my letter?

Thank you.

ANSWER: That's a tough one. If you can't get an actual contact person's name, then you're probably going to have to go generic. But try to be more specific than just saying "Dear Sir" or "To Whom It May Concern". Try something like, "Dear Recruiter" or "Hiring Manager".

Good luck!
