Target resume for best results

Here is one resume tip you ignore at your peril. To get an employer to sit up and take notice, speak specifically to him or her through your resume.

Yes, your resume is a marketing tool for you. But, in reality, it's not all about you... Or at least it shouldn't be!

Do you know how many resumes a typical hiring manager looks at for each job? Usually hundreds.

No, that's not a typo ... hundreds of resumes are typically submitted for most decent jobs advertised online or in the newspaper.

But only a small fraction of those resumes are targeted to each specific employer. This resume tip is where you can go the head of the pack. Just take the time to think about what you really want and how that fits in with what the employer really wants. Display that knowledge in your resume, and you're sure to be invited in for an interview.

How to Target a Resume

Target your resume... or else!

Follow these 3 steps to target your resume for a specific job or employer target:

  1. Make sure you know what you want to accomplish in your career or professional life. Know what position or job responsibilities you are aiming for.

  2. Do some research on the company you want to hire you. This is easy to do on the Internet. Almost everyone has a website these days. Go to their site and read through every page to get a feel for their culture. Be sure to read the job advertisement carefully to learn about what they're looking for in a candidate. Talk to people in the company if you can.

  3. Customize your resume to match the qualifications and experience they are looking for with your accomplishments. Use as many keywords as you can.

Take note!

Targeting Tips

One of the easiest and quickest ways to target a resume is to do it in the summary of qualifications section. That way it's front and center at the beginning of the resume and sets the tone from the get go.

To customize your summary section, review the job posting and then take specific elements of your experience, your credentials, and your education that best match what the employer is looking for... and include them in your Summary of Qualifications section.

Looking for Target Resumes Examples?

I know examples can help you understand what you're supposed to do. So, say the job posting asks for a nurse with IV certification, burn care experience and a willingness to rotate shiftwork.

If that matches your experience and desires, then just be sure to include all those things in your summary. So, you might say something like...

"Hard-working registered nurse with 15 years of hospital experience, including 5 years in the burn unit and 10 years in critical care, thrives on a fast-paced work environment and is open to flexible scheduling. Certified in infusions, wound and ostomy care."

Does that help you understand?

In Summary...

Get ahead of the pack with a targeted resume

The more closely you target a resume to ensure that the content of your resume matches the content of a job posting, the more likely you will be to get that coveted interview and land a job of your dreams.

If you don't feel qualified to do this on your own, think about getting professional help from a resume writing service, like ResumeEdge.com or use an online resume builder.

Also, once you have finished targeting the resume, make sure you also target your cover letter!
