How do I handle a ten year gap in my employment history on my resume and cover letter?

I want to return to the work force part time after a 10-year retirement. I retired from the insurance industry (10 yrs. ago) after a successful 15 yr. career. I would like to return to work part-time and not in a career... am interested in a job. During the past ten years I completed a BA degree, became a certified paralegal, volunteered for Hospice, & traveled. How do I handle this on my resume & cover letter?

How Do I Handle a Gap in Employment on my Resume?

I was with a company for 10 years prior to being laid off as the company downsized. I have had two brief periods of employment in the same field that didn't work out as I expected. If I do not include them, it will appear as if I have not been employed in over 6 months which has not been the case. How do I show that I continued to remain active without drawing attention to the short term periods of employment?
