I will be relocating to New York in May and I am currently looking for job in the area. Should I mention something about this in my cover letter? My resume lists my current address, which is Cambridge, MA. Will potential employers shy away from me because of this?
ANSWER: Hi Michael, Definitely! You want to let prospective employers know that even though you currently live in Massachusetts that you are dead serious about moving to their area, so that they'll know you're a viable candidate.
If you're comfortable doing so, you can mention why you're moving, especially if it shows you're serious about the move and not just feeling things out. Stuff like "I've already purchased a new home," or "My wife has been transferred," or "I've always wanted to live in..." or "I'm moving to NY to be closer to my family..." all show a serious intent to relocate.
If you can give them a no cost way to reach you, via internet or email, that may help too.
Good luck with your job search!

I am currently looking for other jobs but I don't want to contact my current job?
ANSWER: Ed... This is not an unusual situation. Simply state in your cover letter that you do not want your current employer contacted until after a job offer is made and accepted. Most employers are used to this and will go with your wishes if they are truly interested in you.
