How Do You Record an Internship That Turned into a Full-Time Position?

by Abby
(Fairfax, VA)

I worked as an intern while I was in college and immediately accepted a full-time position at the same place of employment right after college. How do I go about recording this on my resume? Should it be one or two entries?

You Have Some Choices
by: Kathi

Hi Abby, Congrats on your achievement! I think you have some choices on how to do this. One way is to just list the job under Work Experience and the internship under Education, and then mention your progression in your cover letter.

Alternatively, you could mention the progression under the listing for the job, as one of the bullet points.

Or, you could list the internship under job experience, just as you do your jobs.

I don't think there's one right way. But if you lack job experience you might like being able to list it as one of your "jobs". The only thing I would be sure of is to emphasize that you DID make the progression.

To your success,
Kathi
