How do I write a resume with volunteer work history incorporated?

by Linda E.
(Cincinnati, Ohio)

I left the paying workforce 13 years ago, but have worked as a volunteer during that time. How do I write a resume that incorporates both employment and volunteer work so that the resume does not show a large employment gap? Do I have to separate employment and volunteer work?

Answer: No, Linda, I don't think you need to separate them. Just indicate in parentheses after a job title that it was a volunteer position. Whether you were paid or not, the experience you gained should still be valuable.

To your success... Kathi
