How do I switch to a new career without experience in the new career?
(Panaji, Goa, India)
I've been in the Tourism Industry, Tour Operations specifically, for the past 10 years handling everything, from Data Entry for Airlines, Hotels, to Charter Operation - Managing a team of 20 people to handling, Hotels, Transport, Excursions, Contracting and even recruitment and training. Now I would like to move to Merchandising but, I do not have the specific qualifications per se.
Would appreciate your help on the above...Answer:
This is always the challenge when trying to move into a new career field. You have a couple of options:
Get training or educational degrees in the new career field, which can be time consuming and expensive
Seek out volunteer work, an internship, or other unpaid experience that will help you gain the skills and credibility to move into the new field in a paid position
Convince employers that you have "transferable skills" that will give you expertise in this new field.
Transferable skills are those skills that can be used in a number of different positions or careers. Things like communication skills, ability to organize and attend to detail, being a team player (or a proactive leader), etc. are all transferable skills. I would imagine you have quite a few of these types of skills with your work experience. Figure out how the ones you have would make you a sure thing in your new career.
Much success... Kathi
