How do I present a 2 year gap due to car accident?

by Kirk Heaslip
(Canada)

I have been in the IT field for 25 years where in the last 5 years I was project managing as a consultant. In July 2008, I was in a head on collision and since have been on disability.

I am currently in the process of looking for work and am finding the 2 year gap is a problem. How do I manage this on my resume? Thanks

Answer: Kirk... I really don't think there is any way to handle this other than complete honesty. I'd say that you were in a life-threatening accident that put you out of commission for some time, but that you are now fully rehabilitated and recovered... assuming that's true.

It's better to be upfront about the reason for your gap than trying to hide it. Hiding it just looks shady and raises red flags.

You might also need to consider training to update your skills in your field, if necessary, given your time away from the workforce.
