How do I get an employers attention when I don't have a degree?

by Kay
(Elizabethton, Tennessee)

There have been a couple of positions advertised that require a 4 year degree. I don't have a degree but have performed the responsibilities required for 20 years in the same type work environment.

Should I apply for this position and if so how do I get their attention?

ANSWER: Hi Kay. The key is to show them through your achievements on the resume and your cover letter that your experience is equivalent to "book learning" and a paper degree. In other words, you need to "sell" yourself and your talents/skills/accomplishments. Even if you are successful, recognize that there may be some positions for which you can never qualify because the degree is a necessity for legal or accreditation reasons. Still, it's definitely worth trying!

Best success,
Kathi
