How do I fill in a 12 year gap in my resume?

by Anonymous
(Somewhere)

I have been a homemaker for the last 12 years due to caring for my disabled sister so I have a rather large gap in my work history. Previous to that I waitressed for a number of years. How can I "embellish" my resume without fibbing? Thanks,D.J.

Honesty But Look for Opportunities to Toot Your Horn
by: Kathi

Hi there.. I always advise complete honesty when applying for jobs. Fibs do have a way of being found out eventually. So, do tell what you've been doing the last few years. But... look for ways to describe what you've been doing as a caregiver that will show transferable skills. These are skills that can be used in a variety of jobs, such as communication skills, organizational skills, advocacy skills, etc.

To your success,
Kathi
