How do I address my college now having a different name?

by Heidi
(Virginia)

My college is now a University, how do I address this on my resume since my degree was from the college? On a related note, I also am curious about listing my maiden name (in which my degree was earned). Is this necessary?

ANSWER: Hi, Heidi... great questions! For the institution, I think I would list it something like "Johnson University (formerly Johnson College)". For your name, there are a couple of things you could do:

  • Heidi Smith (nee Heidi Jones)

  • Heidi (Jones) Smith

  • Just reference your maiden name in your cover letter

Even if you use one of the first 2 methods, you might want to mention the name change (for both you and your college) in your cover letter, just for the sake of complete clarity. You wouldn't want them to check you out and think you'd falsified your credentials when they can't find you under your current name.
