Have you ever dreamed of being your own boss by having a freelance career or a business of your own?
It's not that far-fetched these days. Thousands of people who have been downsized, right-sized, or subject to some other corporate trend have started their own independent consultant careers. So have lots of others—like me—who just couldn't stomach the corporate politics and control baloney anymore.
First, let's look at how you might get involved in starting a freelance career...

several years ago and I've never looked back. Having a freelance career does require tremendous self-discipline and it can be isolating. But, I love the freedom, the variety of jobs I take on, and being able to work in sweats or shorts if I want. (Or even my pajamas, on occasion)
A couple of other places that have high quality freelance jobs are:
I've used both, and for my freelance area (writing and editing), I feel that Elance is the better choice. But if you're a graphic artist or some other specialty, you might find that Guru works out better. It does cost to be a member of both (at least if you want first dibs at the really good listings), but I think it's worth it, at least to get your freelance career kick-started.
How About Starting Your Own Home Internet Business?
Another option that more and more people these days are pursuing is their own home internet business, which after all is a kind of freelance career, don't you think?
It's not nearly as hard as you might think. Take an idea, passion, hobby or any type of specialized knowledge and you can turn it into a profitable part time or full time home web-based business of your own.
There are just so many ways you can go with this, but my recommendation—if you want to go this route—is to develop some kind of niche business to market on the Web.
At all costs, avoid any and ALL of the get rich quick schemes you'll see everywhere on the Internet. Getting rich quick is a pipe dream. You have to work at any success, whether offline or online.
But the nice thing about a home internet business is that you can choose how big you want it to be and how much work to put into it. So if you still want to get a traditional job, but have a little home business as a backup or to make extra money, that's really up to you.
