Product Reviews: Create Resume with a Web-Based Resume Maker?
It's a mixed bag when it comes to using a create resume maker.
If you don't feel up to creating your own resume from scratch or by using a
template,
then it is possible to make one using a web-based resume maker or builder. Your results may vary.
I have reviewed 3 create resume maker products. Stop back every once in a while, because I will be updating this page as I discover new products.
PongoResume.com
(formerly 10minuteresume.com)
Technically, Pongo Resume is not a free resume builder, but you can create resume for free with their free trial, so I thought I'd include it here. It's quite a robust application and helps you with both the resume and cover letter.
Pros:
Lots of control over formatting and content
View as you go
Choice of many different styles
Can customize headings
Cons:
Limited features in the free trial
Would like to see more styles
Bottom Line You really have to pay for a membership to use this service with all its functionality. But it only costs $9.95 for one month, and it looks to me like you get a lot for a measly $10 bucks! They have a cover letter interface too, so that would be another plus.
WebResume.com
At www.WebResume.com, you can make a web-based resume for free. It’s a very easy interface to use. Basically, you just fill in the blanks, then press submit, and presto! You've got a web-based resume.
Pros:
Ease of use
Help system for every single block of the resume
Nice selection of styles
Cons:
Web-based only – you don't get a resume that you can print or email.
Limited control over the appearance of the resume
Bottom Line If you just want to create resume for the web, then this program offers a workable solution. The end product is professional looking. But if you need a resume that you can send out, then this won't do it for you.
Best HeadHunters Resume Builder
This site offers a free web-based interface for building a resume and cover letter, which you can email or print.
Pros:
Easy to use, form-type screens
Lots of features
Can do cover letters and follow up letters too
Cons:
Chronological only format
No customization of sections or formatting
One style only
Very little help
Bottom Line If you really don't want to have to worry about constructing a resume and you don't care about having any control over what the final product looks like, this is a great service. (Of course, you can cut and paste the resume into Word and format it there, if you like.) And I liked that they would help you construct the letters too. For a free product, this isn't bad.
Even though you CAN create your resume for free using one of these services, I think you're better off trying to
create resume using downloadable templates
in most cases. But then, I'm a control freak, so your experience may differ! At any rate, if you're not paying anything, you don't have much to lose other than your time by playing around a bit with a create resume maker on the web.
